First launched in January 1986, the extended version of the baseline ATR 42 soon met with numerous orders. The first ATR 72 was delivered to Finnish airline Finnair in October 1989. In three decades, this twin turboprop airliner has proven itself a winner with almost continuous orders coming from all parts of the world.
A total of 187 ATR 72-200 was produced before production switched in 1989 to the ATR 72-500 with 365 orders booked. The most recent variant, the ATR 72-600, launched in 2009, first entered service with Royal Air Maroc in 2011. So far 448 copies of this model have been delivered.
ATR foresees a world market of some 3,000 turboprops over the 20 years to come.
