The first Group of Communication and Control (1st GCC) conducted a major operation to relocate the TPS-B34M air defense radar, through its Squadrons. Previously located at Santa Maria Air Force Base (RS) in support of the Brazilian Aerospace Defense System (SISDABRA), the equipment has been transported to Caicó (RN), where it will support the multinational operational Exercise CRUZEX, scheduled tô take place from November 3rd to 15th, in Natal (RN).
The aim is to enhance radar coverage in the areas where low-altitude traffic detection poses significant challenges, ensuring safe and orderly air traffic control during the exercise.
The radar’s relocation occurred from September 2nd to 16th, moving from Santa Maria and Canoas (RS) to Natal and Caicó (RN). Approximately 50 military personnel were involved in the operation, which included ground and air support for transporting all equipment.
This complex maneuver integrates multiple systems requiring the expertise of various specialists, including radar and telecommunications technicians, electrical and electromechanical experts, supply and data link specialists, and information technology professionals.
Radar installation is scheduled for October 1st. The operation involves several stages, including infrastructure preparation, testing, technical adjustments, certification flights by the Special Flight Inspection Group (GEIV), and integration into the Third Integrated Air Defense and Air Traffic Control Center (CINDACTA III).
“In yet another prestigious CRUZEX exercise in 2024, the Brazilian Air Force has the full support of DECEA, through its operational arm, the First Group of Communication and Control and all its subordinate Squadrons, to deploy the telecommunications network, radar coverage, data links, and all necessary resources to ensure this exercise is conducted as safely and efficiently as possible,” emphasized Colonel Hugo Slavez Filho, aviador and Commander of the Fourth Squadron of the First Group of Communication and Control (4th/1st GCC).
About the 1st GCC
The 1st GCC comprises five subordinate Squadrons located in the North, South, Northeast, and Southeast regions of Brazil. Its mission is to manage activities related to the installation, operation, and maintenance of communication, control, and portable aerotactical alarm systems. Its mobile resources can be deployed anywhere in the national territory, complementing existing infrastructure or establishing services where none are available.

The TPS-B34M is an air traffic control radar widely used by the Brazilian Air Force for air defense missions. Notable for its capability to enhance aircraft en route detection from its installation site, one of its key advantages is its portability, allowing deployment in any region of the country.
