Domestic Brazilian air travel has expanded significantly, fueled by a growing middle class, improving regional connectivity, and competitive fares driven by low-cost competition from Gol and Azul.

The airline has resumed and expanded international routes from São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport, including a resumption of direct services to several European destinations that were suspended during the restructuring. Capacity to Europe, the United States, and within South America has been steadily restored and in some cases increased beyond pre-pandemic levels.

Fleet Modernization at Scale

A key driver of LATAM’s improved economics is an accelerated fleet modernization program. The group has taken delivery of dozens of Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft, replacing older A319ceo and A320ceo jets, while its widebody fleet has been consolidated around the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The newer aircraft’s improved fuel efficiency has meaningfully reduced the group’s cost per available seat kilometer, an effect amplified by the scale of LATAM’s operations.

The group has also invested in sustainability initiatives, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) agreements with Brazilian producers — an area where Brazil holds particular promise given its agricultural feedstock base and existing biofuel expertise.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the strong results, LATAM faces structural challenges. Currency volatility in several of its operating markets, ongoing airport infrastructure constraints in Brazil, and rising competition from ultra-low-cost carriers complicate the outlook. The Brazilian government’s continued investment in regional airport infrastructure — a priority under the current administration’s concession program — will be critical to sustaining growth in secondary markets.

For now, LATAM’s record profit is a signal that Latin American aviation has not merely recovered — it has reset to a higher trajectory.

LATAM Airlines Group, the largest airline group in Latin America, has reported record annual profits, driven by surging passenger demand across South America and a successful restructuring that emerged from the COVID-19 bankruptcy period stronger than the company had been before the pandemic.
