The engines deliver approximately 25 percent lower fuel burn compared to first-generation E-Jets, a figure that has become increasingly compelling as jet fuel prices remain elevated.

The E195-E2, the largest member of the family with capacity for up to 146 passengers, occupies a unique market niche: it is larger than any first-generation E-Jet but smaller and more economical than the smallest A320neo variants for thin routes. Azul Brazilian Airlines has been the most visible operator, using the type to develop new routes in Brazil’s interior that were previously served only by turboprops or not at all.

The Scope Clause Challenge

The E175-E2, despite its impressive performance credentials, has faced a specific market barrier in the United States: pilot scope clauses in U.S. regional airline agreements cap the weight of aircraft that can be operated by regional carriers, and the E175-E2 exceeds those limits. This has effectively blocked the type from the largest regional aviation market in the world, a situation Embraer has been lobbying airlines and unions to resolve for several years.

Outside the U.S., however, no such constraint applies. KLM Cityhopper, SAS, and Air Astana are among the operators that have built E2 fleets for intra-European and regional routes, and Embraer sees significant growth potential in Southeast Asia and Africa where regional connectivity remains underdeveloped relative to demand.

Brazil’s Aviation Champion

For Brazil, Embraer’s commercial success carries significance beyond the corporate balance sheet. The company is the country’s largest exporter of high-technology manufactured goods, and the E2 program supports tens of thousands of jobs across the São Paulo state supply chain. Brazilian development bank BNDES has historically supported Embraer’s export financing, and the company’s performance is closely watched as a barometer of Brazilian industrial competitiveness.

With a backlog of several hundred E2 aircraft and a production rate that continues to climb, Embraer enters the next phase of the recovery with cautious optimism — and a product lineup that is increasingly difficult for regional carriers to ignore.

Embraer’s E-Jets E2 family — the second generation of the Brazilian manufacturer’s highly successful regional jet line — is gaining commercial momentum as global regional aviation recovers and airlines seek fuel-efficient alternatives to aging fleets of first-generation jets.
