ding all relevant project ele-
ments, was handed over to
the Luftwafe only to achieve
Initial Operational Capability
(IOC) in June 2012 after the
NBS nucleus of FlaRakG 1 suc-
cessfully completed its initial
qualifcation. In the mean-
time the Cold War era short-
range Franco-German Euro-
missile Roland 2 was struck of
charge with the Heer—a year
after the French Army had
withdrawn its own last 3,000
operational missiles.
Ironically the Luftwafe has completed the initial opera-
tional readiness of the Mantis weapon system just in time
to warrant the system’s deployment to Afghanistan in 2012.
However this plan has since been shelved, both for economic
reasons and because NATO has set the 2014 date for the end
of its mission in Afghanistan.

Facilmente deslocável, um sistema Mantis é composto de
quatro a seis cânones metralhadoras Rheinmetall de 35 mm,
posicionadas em torno de um local importante, e remota-
mente controlada por um conjunto de sensores sofsticados.
É totalmente automático, a fm de fornecer 24 horas por dia
e por todo o perímetro (360°) resposta instantânea contra
ameaças de curto alcance que coloquem em risco qualquer
ativo vital (um acampamento militar, uma unidade de QG
ou… uma usina nuclear). A “bolha” da proteção fornecida por
um Mantis NBS com quatro cânones pode chegar a 10.000 m2.
O sistema é muito parecido com o Phalanx da General Dy-
namics ou o Goalkeeper CIWS (Close-In Weapon System) da
Thales Nederland, através da formação rápida e concentrada
