Derrotando os "ChiComs" e além
Derivado de um sistema de
armas antiaéreo puro, proje-
tado pela Contraves na Suíça, o
C-RAM da Rheinmetall evoluiu
signifcantemente e foi adap-
tado desde o início para lidar
com foguetes inimigos, artil-
haria e morteiros, que são hoje
o principal perigo assimétrico
em oposição às forças amigas
engajadas em operações no
exterior. Isto é precisamente
o que a OTAN descreve como
"Inner Tier, Ordnance-based
weapons"
[veja ilustração na
página 18]
; em respeito às ar-
mas "rogue" como os infames
foguetes "ChiCom" (de China
Communist) de 122 e 107 mm,
fabricados na China, lançados
do solo.
Uma típica arma robusta
dos homens pobres, com um
alcance de cerca de 11.000 m,
um foguete ChiCom de
122 mm pesa 45 kg, enquanto
o modelo de 107 mm, pesando
18 kg, tem um alcance máximo
de 8.300 m. Já usada há mui-
to tempo pelos mujahideen
contra os soviéticos ou pelo
vietcongue contra as forças dos
EUA no Vietnã, esta arma é ago-
ra utilizado pelos talibãs contra
as forças da OTAN no Afeganis-
tão, principalmente para atacar
short-range threats menacing
any vital asset (a soldier en-
campment, a unit HQ or… a
nuclear powerplant). The pro-
tection “bubble” provided by a
4-gun Mantis NBS can measure
10,000m2. The system works,
very much like the General
Dynamics Phalanx or Thales
Nederland Goalkeeper CIWS
(Close-In Weapon System),
by building a rapid concen-
trated and impassable wall of
steel in front of an incoming
rocket, artillery shell or mortar
round—against which “soft
kill” counter-measures (smoke
or fare) are totally inefective.
The Mantis NBS system’s exact
“kill distance grid” is confden-
tial, however fgures mumbled
by the Luftwafe says Mantis
can detect a small target 3km
away and destroy it, with a 99%
probability, at 1,2 km (0,65nm).
That is more than twice the
reach distance of the Goalkee-
per (500m/0,27nm) or Phalanx
(300m/0,162nm). With Man
tis, the kill probability is gua-
ranteed by the number of guns
involved in the same action:
four to six! All using 35mm “air-
burst” shells, while Goalkeeper
uses standard 30mm shells and
Phanlanx 20mm rounds.
