Nine countries attended

BA12, providing maritime,

land and air units or obser-

vers. The countries partici-

pating with the U.S. forces

were Australia, Canada,

France, Italy, Netherlands,

New Zealand, Spain and the

United Kingdom. But only did

France participate with some

major hardware, in the form

of FS M

istral

, one of three

LHDs today in service with

the French Navy.

One of the exercise’s

priorities was to incorporate

lessons learned over the

past 10 years of challenging

combat operations, overseas

contingency operations, hu-

manitarian assistance/disaster

relief (dubbed HA/DR in mili-

tary parlance), noncombatant

evacuation operations (NEO)

and homeland defence.

Long in the start, despite

very clement weather, the

exercise focused on the fun-

damental aspects and roles

of amphibious operations to

improve amphibious force

readiness and profciency.

Singularly for executing the

six core capabilities of the

Maritime Strategy: forward

presence, deterrence, sea

control, power projection,

maritime security and huma-

nitarian assistance/disaster

response.

“In today’s world, the

Navy-Marine Corps teammust

remain capable of gaining

access to an operational area,

and projecting and sustaining

a sizable landing force ashore”

said Lt. General Dennis Hejlik,

Commander, MARFORCOM,

echoed by Capitaine de

Vaisseau Emmanuel Gué,

commander of the French

Amphibious Task Group.

“We

have the legislated responsibili-

ties to be able to conduct these

operations, and we certainly

must be ready to do so.”

The culmination of Bold

Alligator 2012 included three

large-scale events within the

exercise: A U.S. and French

amphibious assault at Camp

Lejeune; an aerial assault

from the sea into Fort Pickett;

and an amphibious raid on

Fort Story.

Embedded within BA12's

players was the U.S. Navy

Riverine Group 1 (RIVGRU 1)

and Riverine Squadron (RI-

VRON) 1, one time deployed

in Iraq, whose responsibility

with their fast-boats was to

deny the use of in-shore

maritime environment to

any insurgent or foe, as well

as to provide “hot extraction”

to Navy SEALS or downed

airmen, then fown back

to the TF by helicopter or

tilt-rotor. A very impressive

sight reminiscent of Viet-

nam era combat actions!

desastres.

O ponto culminante do

Bold Alligator 2012 incluiu

três grandes eventos dentro

do exercício : um assalto an-

fíbio dos EUA e da França em

Camp Lejeune ; um ataque

aéreo desde o mar em Fort

Pickett, e um ataque anfíbio

em Fort Story.

Incorporado dentro do

grupo de players do BA12 foi

o Riverine Group 1 (RIVGRU

1) e o esquadrão fuvial

RIVRON 1, uma vez implan-

tado no Iraque, cuja respon-

sabilidade com seus barcos

rápidos era negar o uso do

ambiente marítimo a qual-

quer insurgente ou inimigo,

bem como fornecer “hot

extraction” para os SEALS da

U.S. Navy ou aviadores aba-

tidos, então levado de volta

para o TF por helicóptero ou

tilt-rotor. Uma impressionante

combate da era Vietnam.
