Bombardier Global 7500 Breaks Another Range Record, Connecting Antipodal Cities Nonstop

Bombardier’s Global 7500 business jet has set a new city-pair range record, completing a nonstop flight between Sydney, Australia, and New York — a distance of approximately 9,800 nautical miles that represents one of the longest commercial routes on Earth — demonstrating that the world’s longest-range business jet continues to push the boundaries of what private aviation can achieve.

The demonstration flight, operated with a reduced passenger load and optimized fuel loading, covered the Sydney-to-New York route in approximately 19 hours and 50 minutes, beating the previous nonstop record for a business jet over the same routing. The flight validated Bombardier’s claim that the Global 7500 can connect virtually any two cities on Earth that are not antipodal — that is, directly opposite each other on the globe.

The Aircraft Behind the Record

The Global 7500 is powered by two GE Passport engines, a new engine developed specifically for the aircraft that combines high fuel efficiency with the low noise and emissions characteristics that make business jets welcome at noise-sensitive airports. The aircraft’s fly-by-wire flight control system, the first in a Bombardier business jet, enables precise handling characteristics across the full performance envelope.

The cabin — at 54 feet the longest in any purpose-built business jet — is divided into four living spaces: a front club suite, a conference/dining room, an entertainment lounge, and a full-size bedroom with ensuite bathroom. On a 20-hour flight, the ability to sleep in a proper bed rather than a reclining seat is not an amenity — it is a physiological requirement for arriving functional.

The Market for Extreme Range

Who actually needs to fly nonstop from Sydney to New York? The market is narrow but real: senior executives of global corporations, government officials requiring discretion, ultra-high-net-worth individuals for whom the combination of time and privacy justifies the operating cost. A Global 7500 costs approximately $75 million to purchase and $4,000 to $6,000 per flight hour to operate — figures that limit the addressable market to a small global elite.

But the range record serves a marketing purpose beyond its literal applicability. It establishes the Global 7500 as the definitive ultra-long-range business jet — a positioning that drives sales even to customers whose actual missions require nothing like 9,000 nautical miles. Buyers of the most expensive products in any category often want the most capable product, regardless of whether they will use its peak capabilities.

Bombardier’s Resurgence

The Global 7500’s continued success is part of a broader Bombardier resurgence. After selling its commercial aviation divisions — the Q Series turboprops to Longview Aviation and the C Series (now the Airbus A220) to Airbus — Bombardier refocused entirely on business jets and has returned to profitability. The company’s order backlog has grown steadily, and its Learjet retirement, announced in 2021, allowed full resource concentration on the Global and Challenger families.

For business aviation as a sector, the Global 7500’s record flights are a reminder that the top of the market is not constrained by what was previously thought possible — it is constrained only by what has been engineered.
