O fare IR é simples,
robusto e efcaz, e

The ubiquitous Infra-Red Counter-Mea-
sures (IRCM) decoy fare is nearly 50 years
old – it is actually contempory to the frst
shoulder-launched missile: the Convair
XMIM-43A Redeye of 1963, evaluated
between 1965 and 1966. The IR fare is
simple, robust and efective, and was, for
many years, the only means of providing
aircraft protection against the IR-guided
missile. Flares create infrared targets with
a much stronger signature than the air-
craft’s engines, therefore providing fc-
titious targets that cause the missile to
make incorrect steering decisions. The
missile will rapidly break of a target lock-
on and miss its intended target.
