O
próprio nome da Força Aérea Alemã, ou Luftwafe, há
muito está ligado a excelência e a extrema letalidade em
artilharia antiaérea, seja leve ou pesada. O infame Flak (abre-
viação de
Flugabwehrkanone
) contra os bombardeiros aliados
durante a 2ª Guerra Mundial está aí para nos lembrar… Em
2011, a Luftwafe renovou sua habilidade nesse campo quan-
do começou a operar um novo e original sistema de defesa
aérea chamado M
antis
, um foguete de curto alcance contra,
sistema de artilharia e morteiro (C-RAM); uma variante evo-
luída do sistema Skyshield projetado pela divisão Oerlikon da
Rheinmetall Defence. M
antis
signifca “Modular, Automatic,
Network capable Targeting and Interception System“.

mão, ou “sistema de proteção de (muito) curto alcance”, no
jargão militar alemão, o M
antis
é um marco importante no
programa SysFla da Bundeswehr, que está atualizando pro-
gressivamente a capacidade de defesa aérea da Alemanha;
mas também representa um importante êxito para a Rhein-
metall Defence, embora este engenhoso sistema avançado
nunca será implantado em um teatro avançado para provar
o seu valor no Afeganistão, onde teria sido um importante
complemento para proteger as Bases Operacionais Avan-
çadas alemãs (FOB) que estão sob ataques regulares de fo-
guetes ou morteiros dos rebeldes talibãs.

ber… In 2011, the Luftwafe has renewed its skill in that feld
when it began operating a new and very original air defence
weapon system named M
antis
, a short-range counter rock
et, artillery and mortar (C-RAM) system; an evolved variant
of the Skyshield system designed by the Oerlikon division of
Rheinmetall Defence. M

stands for “Modular, Automatic,
Network capable Targeting and Interception System“

short-range protection system” in German military parlance,

antis
is a major milestone in the Bundeswehr’s SysFla pro-
gramme, which is progressively upgrading Germany’s air de-

Cada um dos seis canhões Rheinmetall Mantis NBS instalados em
torno de um FOB, é acionado automaticamente criando uma “parede de
aço” contra qualquer foguete, projétil (de morteiro ou artilharia), bomba
lançada por aeronave ou outro objeto voador, disparando a uma taxa de
cem cartuchos “airburst” de 35 mm por minuto, em rajadas de 24 projé-
teis que formam uma letal nuvem de aço em forma de cone na trajetória
do alvo que se aproxima. O tempo de resposta para o sistema detectar e
disparar contra qualquer alvo é de cerca de 4 segundos.
Each of the six Rheinmetall Mantis NBS revolver guns installed around
a FOB or other vital asset fires automatically a “wall of steel” at any inco-
ming rocket, mortar round, artillery shell, aircraft bomb or other flying
object at the rate of one hundred 35mm “airburst” shells per minute by
bursts of 24 shells which form a large lethal cone-shaped steel cloud in
the flight path of the incoming target. The response time for the system
to detect and fire against any target is about 4 seconds.
