T he summer of 2012 has
marked the withdrawal
of the last original Nord Avia-
tion C-160 Transall of the
French Air Force; from the
initial batch of 50 received
between 1968 and 1974. This
very aircraft, C‑160R n°18,
was handed over, on 22 Au-
gust, to the Musée de l'Air et
de l'Espace at Paris-Le Bour-
get to be exhibited in the
large museum's collection.
Delivered in fight from
its lifetime home base, Base
Aérienne 123 Orléans-Bricy,
the veteran aircraft landed
at Le Bourget at 15:30 in
front of an honour guard as
well as many gathered there
to celebrate the retirement
of this ultimate operational
Transall, a machine with 43
years of stalwart service and
over 22,000 fight hours log-
ged. Initially commissioned
