que ostentava quando participou
do memorável assalto aéreo em
Kolwezi, no Congo, em 1978. A
ousada operação resultou na
libertação dos reféns.
French Air Force C 160R n°18 in
flight toward Paris on 22 August
2012. Prior to being struck off
charge, the aircraft was repain-
ted in the livery it carried while
it partook to the memorable air
assault on Kolwezi in the Congo in
1978. The Battle of Kolwezi was an
airborne operation by the French
Army that took place in May of
that year during the attack of Zaire
by the Front National de Libération
du Congo. It aimed at rescuing
European and Zairian hostages
held by Katangese rebels after
they conquered the city of Kolwezi.
The daring operation succeeded
with the liberation of the hostages
and reduced military casualties.

Escadre de Transport at Or-
léans-Bricy, this machine was
built at Bourges in November
and December 1968 by Nord
Aviation, then part of the
Franco-German Transport Al-
lianz concern with WFB and
HFB in the Federal Republic
of Germany, thus the appro-
priate name “Transall” which
has now gone into history.
Powered by a pair of Rolls
Royce Tyne Mk.22 turboprop
engines, each normally ra-
ted at 4,549kW, and driving
large four-blade, reversible-
pitch constant-speed propel-
lers, built by Ratier Figeac in
France, the Transall has be-
come for long synonymous
with French military air trans-
port, as it is too with the Ger-
man Luftwafe. Indeed, for
France as for Germany, the
Transall has been more than
a symbol: it has been a long
serving airlift tool, a good
tool which both countries ex-
pect to replace soon enough
with the A400M Atlas.
For its ultimate fight,
C-160R No.18 was fown by
General Philippe Gasnot, a
veteran Transall pilot and the
commander of France's airlift
feet. Ms Catherine Maunou-
ry, Director of the Musée de
l'Air et de l'Espace (and one
time Female World Aerobatic
Champion), welcomed the
veteran aircraft a while later
at Le Bourget Airport, along
with an honour guard provi-
ded by the French Air Force.
“Indeed, it has been over 43
years now that your legendary
silhouette has been spotted in
all the world's skies, appeasing
tensions and bringing much
needed help to the popula-
tions in Africa, in Asia, in the
Pacifc and in the Americas.”
Often nicknamed ”the sol-
dier of air transport” the Tran-
sall was during four decades
the number one launching

o apropriado nome "Transall",
que agora faz parte da história.
Alimentado por um par
de motores turboélices Rolls
Royce Tyne Mk.22, com nor-
malmente 4.549 kW de potên-
cia, e girando hélices com qua-
tro grandes pás de velocidade
constante e pitch reversível,
construídos por Ratier Figeac
na França, o Transall tornou-se
há muito tempo sinônimo do
transporte aéreo militar fran-
cês, assim como também da
Luftwafe alemã. De fato, tanto
para a França quanto para a
Alemanha, o Transall tem sido
mais do que um símbolo: tem
sido uma longeva ferramenta
de transporte aéreo, uma boa
ferramenta que ambos os
países esperam substituir logo
pelo A400M Atlas.
Em seu voo fnal, C-160R
n°18 foi pilotado pelo général
Philippe Gasnot, um veterano
piloto de Transall e coman-
dante da frota de transporte
aéreo francesa. Catherine
Maunoury, diretor do Musée
de l'Air et de l'Espace (e uma
vez campeã do Female World
Aerobatic), saudou a aeronave
veterana um pouco mais tarde
no aeroporto de Le Bourget,
junto com uma guarda de
honra destacada pela Força
Aérea Francesa. “Na verdade,
forammais de 43 anos emque a
sua lendária silhueta foi fagrada
em todos os céus do mundo,
apaziguando tensões e levando
ajuda muito necessária para as
populações naÁfrica, naÁsia, no
Pacífco e nas Américas.”
Muitas vezes apelidado de
"o soldado do transporte aé-
reo", o Transall foi durante qua-
tro décadas a plataforma nú-
mero um de lançamento para
