O Terrafugia Transition:
um carro-aeronave único
The Terrafugia Transition automobile-aircraft is certifed
I s it a car or is it an airplane? Not really: its is actually both
a fying car and a “roadable” aircraft! And it took a Massa-
chusetts-based general aviation company – Terrafugia, Inc. –
exactly six years to turn a smart and incongruous idea into
a tangible reality called Transition. Six years after Terrafugia’s
initial announcement, the Translation “aerocar” has recently
completed the frst phase of its fight testing.
The fight testing, carried out “up-state” New York, at the
former Strategic Air Command’s Plattsburgh AFB (today an
airport by Lake Champlain), was focused on testing the light
sport aircraft’s full performance envelope. According to its
designers, the Transition prototype was reported to perform
very well, allowing the trials to be carried out quickly.
Let’s recall that Phase I fight testing of a light sport air-
craft in the USA involves determining overall performance
and maneuverability characteristics at speed, weight, centre

fegável"! Que a empresa de aviação geral com sede em Mas-
sachusetts – Terrafugia, Inc. – demorou exatamente seis anos
para transformar uma ideia inteligente e incongruente em
uma realidade concreta chamada Transition. Seis anos após
o anúncio inicial da Terrafugia, o chamado "Aerocar" concluiu
recentemente a primeira fase de seus testes de voo.
Os testes de voo, realizados no norte do estado de Nova
Iorque, na antiga Base Aérea de Plattsburgh (Strategic Air
Command), e que é hoje um aeroporto civil ao lado do Lago
Champlain, tiveram como objetivo testar todo envelope de
desempenho da aeronave leve desportiva. De acordo com
seus criadores, o protótipo Transition teve um desempenho
muito bom, permitindo que os testes fossem realizados ra-
pidamente.
