B etter known among all
sailors as the “Big-E”,
CVN-65 was ofcially decom-
missioned by the U.S. Navy
during a ceremony held on
1 December 2012 at Norfolk,
Virginia, after a long opera-
tional career which spanned
half a century.
USS Enterprise was not a
nuclear aircraft-carrier only:
it was the frst ever nuclear-
powered carrier to go to sea
in 1961 as CVA(N)-65 one half
of a century ago. The “Big-E”
was also a class of its own, as
the fve similar carriers initial-
ly planned were never built,
largely due to uncontrolled
soaring costs in construc-
ting the frst of class at times
where nuclear propulsion
technology was still in infan-
cy. USS Enterprise also was the
longest serving U.S. carrier in
history… and the longest mi-
litary ship in the world with
a length of 1,123ft (342m).
With a water displacement
of 94,781 tons, and powe-
red by eight nuclear reactors

O USS Enterprise não foi
somente um porta-aviões
nuclear, mas sim o primeiro
porta-aviões movido à ener-
gia nuclear lançado ao mar,
em 1961 como CVA(N)-65.
O "Big-E" foi também uma
classe em si mesmo, já que
os outros cinco navios semel-
hantes previstos nunca foram
construídos, em grande parte
devido aos descontrolados
e crescentes custos experi-
mentados na construção do
primeiro navio da classe em
tempos onde a tecnologia de
propulsão nuclear encontra-
va-se ainda em sua infância.
O USS Enterprise foi também o
porta-aviões commais tempo
em serviço ativo nos EUA em
toda a história… E o maior

 O USS Enterprise (CVN-65) é aqui
visto retornando para sua base em
Norfolk, Virgínia, em 4 de novem-
bro de 2012, ao final de sua última
missão. O retorno do USS Enterprise
para a Naval Station Norfolk foi o
25° e último regresso do navio em
seus 51 anos de distintos serviços.
Este super porta-aviões perma-
neceu durante toda a Guerra Fria
como o símbolo do poder naval dos
Estados Unidos da América.

at the end of the aircraft-carrier's
last cruise. USS Enterprise 's return
to Naval Sation Norfolk was the
25th and final homecoming of the
ship's 51 years of distinguished
service. This nuclear super carrier
remained during all the Cold War
the symbol of U.S. naval power.
