Um KC-10A Extender
do 908th Squadron (USAF)
instantes antes de partir
de Al Dhafra, nos Emirados
Árabes Unidos, para uma
missão. Como parte da 380th
Air Expeditionary Wing, os
KC-10A apoiaram a operação
Iraq Freedom e contiunam a
apoiar as operações Enduring
Freedom e Combined Joint
Task Force-Horn of Africa.
As dimensões do KC-10A,
desenvolvido a partir do
Douglas DC-10, fazem dele o
avião tanque mais pesado
existente. O KC-10A tem capa-
cidade para 161.478 kg de
combustível, quase o dobro
da capacidade do KC-135R.
An airman stands at parade
rest as he prepares to help
guide a USAF KC-10A Exten-
der from the 908th Expeditio-
nary Air Refueling Squadron
departing for a mission from
Al Dhafra AB, UAE. As part of
the 380th Air Expeditionary
Wing, the KC-10As supported
operations Iraqi Freedom and
continue to support Enduring
Freedom and the Combined
Joint Task Force-Horn of
Africa. The sheer size of the
KC-10A, developed from
the Douglas DC-10 airliner,
makes the Extender the
heaviest existing tanker.
The KC-10's mixed refuelling
system of hose-and-drogue
and flying-boom allows it to
refuel the aircraft of the Air
Force, Navy, Marine Corps
and allied forces during the
same mission. All KC-10As
are fitted with the McDon-
nell Douglas fly-by-wire
Advanced Aerial Refueling
Boom (AARB). The KC-10A has
a fuel capacity of 161,478 kg,
nearly doubling that of the
KC-135R. The final twenty
KC-10s produced included
wing-mounted pods for
added refuelling spots.
