Argentina Unveils IA-100B Malvina Advanced Trainer Prototype

By Leandro Maldonado on 25/03/2025 Defense

Argentina’s Fábrica Militar de Aviones (FMA) in Córdoba presented the first prototype of the IA-100B Malvina advanced trainer in March 2025, a domestically developed aircraft intended to serve the Argentine Air Force (FAA). The aircraft continues a long tradition of Argentine aeronautical programs that includes the IA-58 Pucará and the IA-63 Pampa.

The IA-100B is designed as a lead-in trainer bridging the gap between primary training aircraft and high-performance combat platforms such as the F-16 recently acquired from Denmark. Developing the aircraft with domestic technology is strategically significant for Argentina, which seeks to rebuild its military aviation industry following years of underinvestment.

The FAA faces a complex capability rebuilding process: decades of budget cuts led to the retirement of the Mirage III, Mirage IIIEA, A-4AR Fightingfalcon and C-101 Aviojet without timely replacement. The arrival of Danish F-16s represents the most significant step in the reconstitution, while the IA-100B addresses the pilot training pipeline for the next generation of Argentine aviators.

In a regional context, the program demonstrates that South American nations maintain ambitions for domestic aeronautical development — running in parallel with foreign platform acquisitions — as part of their broader defense sovereignty strategy.
