O míssil antinavio McDonnell Douglas Harpoon represen­
tou um verdadeiro avanço para o mundo ocidental
quando entrou em serviço na marinha dos EUA no início de
1977. Um armamento realmente inovador, que tornaria obso-
letos os últimos cruzadores de combate dos EUA – e seus fe-
nomenais canhões de calibre 16“ (406 mm) capazes de dispa-
rar projéteis “super pesados” de 1.200 kg
– graças ao seu sistema de guiagem para
qualquer tempo totalmente autônomo,
capacidade além do horizonte e alcance
muito maior. A McDonnell Douglas foi
contratada para o desenvolvimento pre-
liminar pelo Pentágono em 1971, culmi-
nando com um teste de voo do protótipo
em dezembro de 1972, sendo seguido
por um contrato de desenvolvimento in-
tegral no ano seguinte. Extensivos testes
de voo do protótipo em 1974 e 1975 le-
varam à produção inicial em 1976.
Fabricados hoje pela Boeing Defense,
Space and Security, quase 8.000 unidades
do Harpoon já foram produzidas desde
1976. É, portanto, o mais difundido mís-
sil antinavio do tipo “fre and forget” de
uso naval hoje em dia. Este mesmo míssil

when it was frst felded by the U.S. Navy back in early 1977.
A truly novel armament, it was furthermore a weapon that
was to render obsolete the last U.S. battle cruisers – and their
phenomenal 16-inch (406mm) calibre guns fring 1,200kg
“super heavy” armour piercing shells –
just thanks to its fully autonomous all-
weather guidance system and over-the-
horizon capabilities and much longer
range. McDonnell Douglas was awarded
a preliminary development contract by
the Pentagon in 1971, leading to a pro-
totype fight test in December 1972, fol-
lowed by a full development contract in
the following year. Extensive prototype
fight tests in 1974 and 1975 led to initial
production in 1976.
Manufactured today by Boeing Def­
ense, Space & Security, the Harpoon has
been produced in nearly 8,000 copies
since 1976. It is thus the most wide­
spread “fre en forget” antiship missile
in naval service today. That same mis-
