Infra Red jammer, or “Disco light” as it is often
nicknamed. It is an omni-directional active
IR countermeasures set mostly used on the
Apache and Cobra helicopters. The ALQ-144
produces a pattern of pulses that is approxima-
tely synchronized with the rotation rate of the
Manpads IR reticle. Before launch this prevents
the missile actually locking onto the target,
preventing the operator from firing the missile!
After launch it causes the missile to believe
that the target is off to one side or another,

The truth is that in contrast with
electro-magnetically (EM or radar-guided
missiles), infrared-guided missiles are very
difcult to spot and locate as they gain on
a fying aircraft. They have almost no ra-
dar signature, and are generally fred from
the rear, directly toward the jet pipe of an
aircraft or the hot exhaust of a turbine. In
most cases, during combat, pilots have to
rely in priority on their wingmen to spot
the missile’s characteristic smoke trail and
alert them. Since Manpads are inherently
far shorter-legged in distance and alti-
tude range than their radar-guided coun-
terparts, good situational awareness of
altitude and potential threats continues
to be a very efective defence against
Manpads. Luckily, advanced electro-opti-
cal systems – as developed over the past
two decades, like the AN/AAR-57 Com-
mon Missile Warning System – can now
detect missile launches automatically
from the very distinct emissions of a mis-
sile’s rocket motor, both in the infrared (IR)
and ultra-violet (UV) frequency bands.

Branca, a Força Aérea Israelense perdeu
nada menos que 102 aeronaves – 32 F-4,
53 A-4, 11 Mirage e 6 Super Mystère – a
maioria para mísseis superfcie-ar egíp-
cios e sírios. Dois helicópteros, um Bell
205 e um CH-53, também foram abatidos
desta maneira. Em todos esses casos, as
aeronaves israelense estavam totalmente
desprovidas de qualquer sistema de au-
to-defesa IR. Isso já não era mais fato
quando, em 7 de junho de 1981, a Força
Aérea Israelense destruiu o reator nuclear
iraquiano Osirak, ao sul de Bagdá, durante
um ataque aéreo com aeronaves F-16.
Em contraste com os sistemas eletro-
magnéticos (EM), ou seja, mísseis guiados
por radar, os mísseis guiados por IR são
muito difíceis de se detectar e localizar
enquanto se aproximam de uma aero-
