2013, servirá como núcleo do Escadron de Transporte 1/61
“Touraine” em 2014, quando este esquadrão fnalmente aban-
donará seu último punhado de antigos C-160R Transalls.
Acredita-se que o preço de um único AMC A400M seja em
torno de € 135 milhões, com um custo médio de € 20.000
por hora de vôo — três vezes mais caro do que o do Tran-
sall C-160. Porém, o A400M é muito maior, voa mais rápido e
muito mais longe. De forma alguma uma comparação entre
as duas aeronaves de transporte, com base únicamente no
preço, faz algum sentido. O A400M será a primeira aeronave
de transporte estratégico tático a se juntar à Força Aérea
Francesa, que espera receber todos os seus 50 A400Ms pla-
nejados antes de 2024. A primeira aeronave em serviço será
MSN 007, 008, 010 e 011. MSN 009 vai para a Força Aérea Turca
para iniciar operações iniciais em Kayseri, sede do 12. Hava
Ulaştırma Ana Üs Komutanlığı, base da Türk Hava Kuvvetleri
transporte principal.
Apenas recentemente, em junho, o A400M foi dado um
nome com o britânico e francês: será “Atlas”, um nome apro-
priado para o gigante mitológico – o primeiro rei da mítica
Atlântida – que carrega a terra em suas costas! u

Needless to say that everyone today is eager to see A400M
MSN 007 handed over to the French Air Force. It is there, and
there only, that the A400M will get its frst important endor-
sement: in feld service with the Multinational Entry Service
Team (MEST) at Orléans-Bricy, the evaluation cell attached to
the CEAM (Centre d’Expériences Aériennes Militaires) that will
be in charge of the lead-in training for the frst French A400M
crews. This aircraft, along with three others planned to be de-
livered during 2013, will serve as the nucleus of Escadron de
Transport 1/61 “Touraine” in 2014 when this squadron fnally
relinquishes its last handful of legacy C-160R Transalls.
The price of a single AMC A400M is believed to be around
€135,000,000 with a €20,000 average cost per fight hour—
this is three times more expensive than that of the Transall.
But the A400M is much larger, fies faster and much farther. In
no way a comparison between the two airlifters on the sole
price can make sense. The A400M will be the frst strategic
tactical airlifter to join the French Air Force which hopes to
get all of its planned 50 A400Ms before 2024. The frst aircraft
in service will be MSN 007, 008, 010 and 011. MSN 009 will go
to the Turkish Air Force to start initial operations at Kayseri,
home-base of the 12. Hava Ulaştırma Ana Üs Komutanlığı, the
Türk Hava Kuvvetleri’s main transport base.
Just recently, in June, the A400M was given a name by the
British and French: it will be “Atlas”, quite a ftting name for the
mythological giant who carries the earth on his back! u
