A
s the only fast global air
transportation system existing
today, commercial aviation
will certainly survive all the crises due
to occur during this century, and likely
beyond, because the need for move-
ment and travel, by sheer curiosity or
pressing survival rationale, has always
been profoundly inscribed in the human
specie, and since the dawn of mankind.
With an estimated population
numbering 7 billion today, mankind
experienced its fastest expansion during
the 20th Century – rightly named “the
Century of Aviation”. Coincidence: just
about when commercial aviation began
to develop in 1927, the world popula-
tion reached two billion. It then took
only 33 years to rise by another billion,
reaching three billion people in 1960, at
the very time the Boeing 707 jets began
operating around the planet. Thereafter,
global population reached four billion in
1974, just as the frst Airbus A300 started
fying regular routes along with the
supersonic Concorde and the Boeing
747 jumbo jet. The fve billion mark was
reached in 1987, when the frst “fy by-
wire” commercial jet – the Airbus A320
– was about to roll. And then six billion
in 1999, the year Airbus, for the frst time
in history, sold more aircraft than Boeing.
According to UNESCO, the world po-
pulation topped seven billion in March
2012, just when IATA released its highest
transportation fgure ever: with nearly
3 billion air passengers recorded for
the year 2011 – 620 million more than
in 2006 – a vigorous trend gathering
momentum in 2012…
