that time.
By the new century, the AvEx had
matured to a fully-fedged army air force
making good use of rotorcraft. With
helicopters permanently not only based
at Taubaté in the state of São Paulo, but
also in the northern region of Amazonas,
at Manaus (home to the 4th battalion).
Nowadays, the 4° BAvEx is heavily
involved in anti-drug operations, it is
the only unit using US-made Sikorsky
UH-60 Black Hawk (designated HM-2)
helicopters. Four were acquired with U.S.
support for use in the military monito-
ring mission on the Ecuadorian-Peruvian
border (MOMEP, Military Observation
Mission Ecuador-Peru) after the two
countries game to grips in 1995 over a
territorial dispute in the Alto Cenepa.

do presidente Getúlio Vargas, então

modernização francesas e italianas; estes
dois países europeus tendo tido uma
forte infuência sobre o pensamento
militar brasileiro naquela época.
No início do novo século, a AvEx já
havia amadurecido para uma verdadeira
força aérea do Exército fazendo o bom
uso de aeronaves de asas rotativas.
Com helicópteros baseados permanen-
temente não apenas em Taubaté no
estado de São Paulo, mas também na
região norte do Amazonas, em Manaus
(sede do 4º batalhão). Hoje em dia, o 4º
BAvEx está fortemente envolvido em
operações antidrogas, sendo a única
unidade a operar os helicópteros norte-
O Cougar AS532UE ou HM-3, é o principal
helicóptero de transporte aéreo médio em uso
no AvEx hoje. Ele estará sendo complementado
pelo novo EC725 Super Cougar, ainda maior.
The AS532UE Cougar, dubbed HM-3, is the
main medium airlift rotorcraft in use with AvEx
today. It is being supplemented with the even
larger EC725 Super Cougar.
