ment can be described in short as:
H
an extended range capabilities sup-
porting low-observable target detection
and full use of new weapon systems such
as the newMBDA Meteor long-range BVR
hypersonic air-to-air missile (due to equip
the Rafale in 2018, and before that both
the Eurofghter/Typhoon and Gripen);
H
a much higher reliability for reduced
maintenance and signifcantly lower
through-life support costs;
H
a greater waveform agility for SAR
(Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging and
improved resistance to jamming.
In view of the intense competition
now going on the international market,
between the BAE/EADS Eurofghter, the
Saab Gripen and the Rafale, it is no sur-
prise that Dassault Aviation and Thales
voiced out with pride this event which
places the French fghter plane ahead of
the trio now.
First benefactor of this new “hi-tech”
radar will be the Armée de l'Air and soon
the Aéronautique Navale (when Rafale M
n°39, also ftted with a RBE2 AESA radar)
joins the fight testing programme with
EC 5/330 “Côte d’Argent” and CEPA/10S
on Base Aérienne 118 in Mont-de-Marsan
early next year.
According to Dassault and Thales, the
project was completed on time and on
budget, and owes its success to what
can be described as
“an exemplary coope-
ration with the DGA and all the companies
involved in the RBE2 AESA programme”.
All export versions of the Rafale—in-
cluding the 126 earmarked for the Indian
Air Force’s MMRCA programme—will in-
corporate Thales AESA advanced radar
technology as standard. This is consistent
with the present F3-O4T standard (pre-
viously known as the “roadmap” stan-
dard), which in fact is the latest standard
retained for the sixty Tranche 4 Rafales
earmarked for France. In short: (25 Rafale
C single-seaters, 25 Rafale B duals and the
last 10 Rafale M ship-borne variants for
the Aéronavale), all to be delivered from
2013 to 2019.
In France, the frst operational squa-
dron to acquire the new radar will be EC
2/30 “Normandie-Niemen” at Mont-de-
Marsan whose proximity with the CEAM
will help to level out any teethingproblem
occurring with the RBE2 AESA in the feld.
Uma matriz básica digitalizada eletronicamente
(ou ESA) fornece agilidade de feixe:
um bônus real em prazo de detecção e evasão de
contramedidas (anti-ECM ou ECCM).
A basic electronically scanned array (or ESA)
provides beam agility: a real bonus in term of
detection and counter-measures (ECCM) evasion.
Um ativo digitalizados eletronicamente matriz
(ou AESA) dá várias feixe ágil juntamente com
eficiência de potência melhorada.
An active electronically scanned array (or AESA)
gives multiple agile beam coupled with improved
power efficiency.
Matriz multi AESA (MA-AESA) irá fornecer
campo panorâmico sem precedentes, até mesmo
acima e abaixo. Eles vão apoiar também arquitetu-
ras com aviônica integrada futuras.
Multi array AESA (MA-AESA) will provide unpre-
cedented panoramic field, even above and below.
They will support as well future integrated avionics
architecture.

Besides new engines allowing for super-cruise mode, it is believed that the updated Russian
Sukhoi T-50 (or PAK-FA) will incorporate a multi array AESA radar, with full flank and rear detec-
tion, designed by Phazotron from its Zhuk (Beetle) line of first generation AESA radars. Thanks
to the maturity of the TRM technology, radar antennas can now be placed almost everywhere
on the airframe of an aircraft, thus giving the pilot an exceptional large field of detection and
threat awareness.
