The late model Mil Mi-171 is part
of the newest equipment provided
to the Afghan AF by Russia with
U.S. funding. This reliable machine
capable of excellent high altitude
performances and of coping with
limited maintenance is well suited
both for the theatre and for the
reduced level of support available
in Afghanistan. Nowadays, those
helicopters have started to operate
in Medevac missions in support
of both the military and civilian

Designated C-27A, eighteen of
the former Fiat G.222 tactical
airlifters of the Italian Air Force’s
48ª Aerobrigata have been offered
to the Afghan Air Force to replace
the veteran Antonov 26s which
survived the civil war of 1992-96.
Refurbished and upgraded they
were delivered as of 2009. By
December 2012, 16 aircraft paid
by the U.S. had been delivered, but
the USAF canceled the contract on
account of alleged lack of mainte-
